I am not young and I am not old. Maybe I am both, or maybe I am timeless…

My 47th birthday was a few weeks ago and I have now had a chance to get used to my new age. I like the way I am ‘old and young’ at the same time.I get to choose when I feel old and when I feel young!

When I see parents pushing prams I know I will not see that time again – but I enjoyed it hugely when I had it, three times over too.

When I see elderly people I think of all the stories they could tell, of all the things they know that I can only wonder about. I wish that we would give elderly people a more prominent role in society: award them the respect they reserve and ask them to guide and monitor younger people, the way Tribal Elders do and have always done.

I am still a long way from earning the right to be an Elder. For now I will just have to be the Mother of Teenagers, enough to be getting on with….

At 47 you spot some of the traps your younger self fell into so readily.  There are a lot of thieves about when it comes to time, energy, life force. Because of the awareness that I have probably lived half my life already, I don’t suffer fools gladly, I choose with ever greater care what I focus on, spend time and energy on and in whose company I do so.

I sometimes mourn the days when all life choices were still open and everything seemed possible. When it felt like time would never run out and I did not know what tiredness was – not the bone-shattering-tiredness that comes from running between clients/students and children.

We live around the corner from Goldsmith’s College and seeing those fresh faced students every day, I see my younger selves. Are they making the right choices? Do they realise what a luxury is is to sit in a cafe with a notebook and hot chocolate all afternoon?!

I feel I have earned my few silver hairs. My body becomes more interesting as I grow older, marked by life experiences and life events. My own body is like a map to both past and future.

Just for fun I decided to run a little search to see if the number 47 has any special meaning or significance and I found this:

The number 47 is a combination of the energies and attributes of number 4 and number 7.  The vibrations of number 4 include those of productivity and application, inner-wisdom and practical-thinking, honesty and integrity, endurance and determination, conscientiousness and discipline.  Number 4 also relates to our passion and drive in life.  Number 7 brings the qualities of spiritual awakening and enlightenment, intuition and inner-knowing, psychic abilities and mysticism, independence and individualism, persistence of purpose andmanifesting good fortune.

47 Sounds pretty good to me!!
